Ionian Islands
A Pearls in Turquoise water
At the western end of the Greek Sea are the Ionian Islands or else the Ionian Islands where everywhere the Venetian element is strongly dominated. The architecture of the buildings is a characteristic example of the Venetian domination in the past, mainly in the old town of Corfu, which is one of the most important sights of the island.
Apart from Corfu, all the Ionian Islands, such as Zakynthos, Kefalonia, and Ithaca, have their own scenery that differs completely from the Cyclades. The stunning natural beauties of the Ionian Islands, such as endless beaches with blue-green waters and golden sandy beaches, are unforgettable images for every visitor.
“It is a nature’s country with great people and I am very proud to go there a lot” . . . Steven Spielberg
The Ionian islands
The Ionian Islands consist of Corfu, Zakynthos, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Lefkada, Paxos and Kythira. These are beautiful islands with splendid natural landscapes full lush vegetation.
The enchanting beaches with crystal clear waters, enormous, imposing buildings, Venetian castles and traditional stone paths all together make up a fairy tale and romantic scenery that transports the travelers in the old days.
Corfu with its traditional villages encircled by dense vegetation that reaches the sea, will take you to another era.
Ithaca, the home of Odysseus with hospitable and friendly residents, is an ideal island for a quiet and relaxing holiday.
In Zakynthos you can visit remarkable monasteries scattered on the island and enjoy its endless sandy beaches with the blue-green seas. Kefalonia with its natural landscapes all over the island, its picturesque ponds, its golden sandy beaches and the natural caves will enchant you making your holidays unforgettable.
The island became very popular with the film “The Mandolina of Captain Correll” a few years ago, so those who have seen the film and cruise to Kefalonia are satisfied as the atmosphere of the island reminds them of the scene of the film.
Kythira, known as the island of Aphrodite, is a peaceful location for a peaceful holiday.
The beautiful Lefkada promises unforgettable moments to its guests while Paxos with its wonderful beaches and sea caves welcomes you in an atmosphere away from the city’s stress.
The inhabitants are engaged in agriculture, livestock farming and fishing but the biggest source of income for the islands is tourism, as every year, especially in the summer months, hundreds of thousands of tourists arrive from Greece and abroad.
Corfu
The capital of the island will enchant you at first glance. With many elements from the Venetian period, Corfu is a miniature of neighboring Italy. The old fort dominates the Garitsa bay and includes almost the entire modern history of the island. One of the most famous and beautiful islands of the Ionian sea, the Corfu is waiting for you to explore…
Paxos-Antipaxos
The beautiful and green islands are a small paradise in the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea and one of the most popular summer destinations in Greece. In recent years tourism has been a key factor in the island’s economy. The inhabitants also deal with fishing and agriculture as there are several olive groves (Paxos) and vineyards (Antipaxos).
Kefalonia
Kefalonia is the largest island of the Ionian Sea with the breathtaking nature and the beautiful waters look like a miniature of Greece. Throughout the coastline of the Kefalonia, you will find dreamy beaches, some of which are among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Among them is the photographed Myrtos, one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world with turquoise waters and golden sand.
Ithaca
Ithaca, the birthplace of Odysseus, and perhaps Homer, is a small island that attracts holidaymakers from all over the world. It is surrounded by some of the bluest waters in Greece. Because it is small, Ithaca does not have the mass tourism that has the neighboring islands of Corfu or Kefalonia. Therefore, many celebrities make their holidays here.
Lefkada
Although it is an island, it has the advantage of being connected to Aitoloakarnania via a floating bridge and so you can reach the island by road without having to travel by boat. Lefkada has the most beautiful natural sights and beaches that are popular worldwide, such as Porto Katsiki, Kathisma and Egremni.
Zakynthos
Zakynthos, The flower of the East, is another Ionian island endowed by nature with unique beauties. It is the third in size and population of the Ionian islands located south of Kefalonia and west of the Peloponnese. Here, you will find some of the most famous beaches, such as Navagio, Laganas, Volimes with the Blue Caves and others. Visitors are amazed by the island’s unique natural beauty, historical monuments and hospitable inhabitants.
